Welcome back to a new week. This week we will have our regular schedule for vocab and spelling again. New words are coming home today. Spelling words are "contractions" this week. Please practice these words at home. Contractions are difficult for some of the children to understand the taking out of letters and replacing with an apostrophe.
Congratulations to AM1, AM12, and RM16 for completing the first round of 100 addition facts on Xtra Math. They will move on to subtraction facts now. We are moving on to telling time in math. Please practice this skill at home. In addition, keep up with Xtra Math and facts. Some children still need help on counting by 2, 5, and 10 also.
Congratulations to Mitchell and Bryan for being the students of the week.
Have a wonderful Tuesday!

Happy Friday
Conferences-I have really enjoyed sitting down with you and chatting with you about your child. As a whole, the children have done a wonderful job improving their reading this year. I am so pleased with their growth. I really enjoy seeing them go to the classroom library and check out a book and love to read it. Sometimes I have to ask some of them to stop reading and do their work, something I never thought I'd have to ask a child to do. Thank you so much for taking the time to show how much you care about your child to learn about their growth in the classroom. Below are some cute love notes from some parents I found on a website that I wanted to share with you. There are so many easy ways we can make our children feel special by taking the time to show we care.
First love note-"Your smile brightened my day today. When I went to work I saw your smiling face. It touched my heart and I smiled back at you.Your smile is a treasure. The more you smile the happier I am. Your smile brightens all who see you. Keep on smiling!
Second love note-You make me feel warm inside when you hug me. I love how you run to me with a hug when you come home from school. I feel so good inside. I love hugging you back. I love your hugs!
Third love note-I appreciate your sweet kisses at bedtime. It's a beautiful way to end our day. Your are such a loving person. It is a joy to be your parent.
I know my kids love finding love letters in their lunchbox, their folder, assignment book, wherever I can sneak them in. One day, I even found a love note in my lunch box! It was so sweet. Love notes deepen the bond between you and your child. You make your child happy when you leave them love notes to show you care. They are easy to create and offer meaningful rewards!
Xtra Math Please continue to practice Xtra Math as many times a week as you can. We still assign it on Wednesdays. We start Time next week and then will introduce 2-digit subtraction. Please continue to work on basic math facts of addition and subtraction to improve speed and accuracy.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Whale and Penguin Projects
Please remember the projects (written report and diorama) are due Friday. Please bring in the finished work on Friday. We don't have a place to store all of the dioramas yet so please wait to bring them in. If you need more paper, remind your child to get some please.
Conference notes went out last week. Please be sure to return them so we can do our best to schedule a time that is convenient for you. We will be sending home the confirmed times based on your preferences tomorrow.
Ms. Accomando is teaching more and more in the classroom now. Please remind your child to be a respectful listener and that Ms. Accomando is a teacher as well. Some of us are forgetting to follow school and classroom rules with the change in teachers. We appreciate a smooth transition to her teaching.
Our math test on two digit addition and money is today. We will start geometry tomorrow. Please continue to practice Xtra Math or flashcards daily! Some children need extra practice in counting by 2, 5, and 10. Please practice this at home also. Thank you.
Reminder there is so spelling test this week, but there is a vocabulary test on Friday.
Have a wonderful week!

Congratulations to last week's Students of the Week Jose Miguel and Hunter!!! This week's Students of the Week are Danny and Karla. They did a great job of making good decisions and being responsible all week. Keep up the great work!
This week we learned a lot more about penguins in the Antarctic. I sure hope your penguin and whale projects are coming along well. Be sure to bring the report and the diorama on Friday, February 10 next week.
Our Valentine's Day Party for both classes will be held on Tuesday, February 14 at 1:15. We are asking the children to create their own box at home and bring it in on Valentine's Day (not before). Please include a slit or opening on top and your child's name clearly visible for the class to read it when passing out Valentine's. We have 26 Clydesdales and 25 Appaloosas. I will send home a class list. Please only send Valentine's for your child's homeroom class. You do not have to participate in sharing of Valentine's, but please remember if you do to include everyone on the list and not just your friends. Thank you. Here is the menu and wish list for the party. Please respond what you would like to contribute for the party. Thank you for your donations. We are also making a Valentine craft and if any parents would like to make a $5 contribution to purchasing these crafts we would gladly appreciate it. I know some of you who are not able to come in have told me before to ask if we need anything, so if you would like to make a donation we appreciate it. Please do not feel obligated to donate.
6 bags of conversation hearts
2 boxes of Ziploc sandwich bags
26 juice boxes
26 Valentine napkins
26 Valentine plates

Tuesday Updates
The MUSIC PROGRAM was a lot of fun! Thank you to all of you who came to show your support and watch your adorable children perform. We were not expecting such a wonderful turnout based on what the children told us that day. We were delighted to have more families show up than we predicted! Thank you once again!
This is our last week for the Reading Challenge. I really hope we step up to the challenge and make 80% or better. We haven't made it yet this month, but we keep getting closer! This week has to be our week!!!! You need 175x4 to complete the challenge by Friday. We can do it!
The Penguin/Whale project came home on Friday. I hope you are enjoying the project. The dioramas can start anytime. We are still doing some beginning touches to get your child started in class Tues. and Wed. Beginning Wed. night they should be ready to start writing. The children are so excited about this project. We cannot wait to see them displayed in the hallway during conferences.
Prepare your calendars! Our Valentine's Day party will be on Tuesday, February 14 from 1:15 pm-2:00 pm. During this time we will pass out Valentine's and enjoy some healthy Valentine snacks. Be watching for a donation list and class list coming soon! Please remember to include everyone in our class on your list of Valentine's. There are 24 students in the class. We appreciate your help and donations for all of our celebrations.
Conferences will be held soon February 16 (2pm-9pm) and 17 (8:00am-12:00 pm)! I look forward to this time to share with you the wonderful growth your child has made this year. We continue to work hard toward our reading goals. Please continue to work on basic math facts with flash cards or Xtra Math. We need to improve our speed of our basic facts to help two digit addition go more smoothly. Knowing our basic facts helps make this process easier and quicker, with less frustration. Thank you for your help with this!
Have a wonderful week! Enjoy the time together working on your projects!

Tuesday Updates
Winter weather is here! Please be sure to send your child to school in the appropriate snow gear every day. We will be having recess outside if the weather is around 15 degrees or warmer. Please send boots, snow pants, hats and gloves everyday. I recommend getting a large ziploc bag (2 feet XLarge) for their winter gear so it fits in the locker and is easier to transport to and from school. Please empty the bag each night and hang the snow gear up so it can dry out. We don't want to have them coming back to school in cold, wet gear every day.
Second Grade Music Concert is Thursday, January 26. The concert begins at 6:00 pm. Mr. Steuer would like all students performing to be here at 5:45. Students can report to their classrooms. Parents can go into the gym. Immediately following the concert, the second grade teachers will be offering a Family Literacy Night. Ms. Salas and I will be offering a 30 minute literacy activity that you may wish to attend. Ms. Salas will be hosting an activity in Spanish, and I will be hosting an activity in English. Ms. Accomando will be making bookmarks with some families. This is not a conference or a time to discuss your child individually, but a chance to have some fun while integrating literacy.
Penguins- We finished our whale study. Now we are learning about penguins. This unit will go on for 2 weeks. We will not have a spelling or vocab list for next week either since this week will flow into next week. I loved hearing about everything your child taught you about whales. I'm glad we have some whale experts now! They are coming home today to see what you already know about penguins. Hopefully they will have a lot to teach you at the end of this unit also. Thank you to those of you who made comments on our blog or wrote me love notes sharing what you learned. I love when the children share their joy of what they learned.
